Beachvolleyballplayers get to work!

The beach groups have been assigned, and the sand beneath our feet means only one thing—the beach volleyball season is in full swing! For those just starting or looking to sharpen their skills, now is a great time to highlight some key beach volleyball rules and share tips and tricks to help you improve.

What is beach volleyball?

Beach volleyball originated in the United States, and as the name suggests, it’s played on sand rather than on a hard surface like indoor volleyball. While it shares the same basic principles as indoor volleyball, there are a few key differences.

The basic rules

  • Teams: Unlike indoor volleyball, where you play with six players, beach volleyball is typically played two against two. This makes the game more dynamic and physically demanding, as you and your partner need to cover the entire court.
  • No fixed positions: Without fixed lines and positions, you and your partner must constantly coordinate your positioning. It’s crucial to quickly regain your position after each play.
  • Technical rules: In beach volleyball, you’re allowed to hold the ball a bit longer during an overhead pass. But beware—when playing the ball to the other side, the contact must be quick and firm.

Tips & Tricks

  1. Be aware of your position
Since it’s just the two of you covering the whole court, positioning is everything. After every move, you need to quickly regain your spot and communicate well with your partner. Before the match, discuss how you want to divide the court and which strategies you’ll use.
  2. Communication is key
With no fixed positions or lines, communicating with your partner is essential. Make sure you’re constantly talking and guiding each other during the game.
  3. Technique in the sand
Running in the sand is tougher than on a hard surface. Shorter strides are more efficient and help you move faster. Stay low and bend your knees, so you’re ready to react quickly.
  4. Avoid soft contact when playing the ball over the net
Make sure that when you’re playing the ball over the net, your contact is quick and firm. Soft or prolonged contact is considered a fault in beach volleyball.

Diving in the sand

One big advantage beach volleyball has over indoor volleyball is that you can dive safely! Since the sand cushions your fall, you can throw yourself fully into the game without worrying about a painful landing.
