Curious about how beach volleyball players are getting on? We interviewed Sophie and Coosje to share their experiences and tips.
What has helped you improve your game?
“In my early days, I really worked on my technique with the help of the coaches,” Coosje tells us. “I had very little experience with ball sports, so I really had to learn it. My game was quite inconsistent at first, but by constantly working on the basics – like positioning – I began to become more consistent.” Sophie adds, “It’s important to get your technique right, even though it can sometimes take a while before you see real results.”
What do you enjoy most about beach volleyball now?
“What I enjoy most now is that I have a better overview of the game,” says Coosje. “At first, I was often confused about where I should stand or when I should move. Now, I can read the game better and know what my teammate needs.” Sophie adds, “I’m also proud that I can now serve overhand. It took a while, and it still goes wrong sometimes, but it’s improving!”
What tip would you give to beginner players?
“My main tip would be: watch other players and learn from them,” says Coosje. “In the beginning, I often watched more experienced players or how our coach demonstrated things, noticing where they stood and how they moved.”
How has your team contributed to your development?
“What I really enjoy about beach volleyball is the dynamic within my team,” says Sophie. “We have players who have grown with me to the level I’m at now. There are also new players, some of whom come from indoor volleyball. This makes the team extra dynamic because we combine different playing styles and experiences.”
What advice would you give to other players to improve their technique?
“My advice is to be patient and keep practising, even if it doesn’t always go right immediately,” says Coosje. “Keep working on your basics. For example, if you want to move faster on the sand or improve your serve, strength training is important. YouTube videos, training sessions, and feedback from coaches can all help to improve your technique and take your game to the next level.”
Excited to train players as well?
We are still looking for coaches. Even if you can just fill in occasionally, it would be a great help! Interested? Contact the beachcommittee.
