On the most beautiful Friday of the year, Dames 5 took to the court for their first home match of the season. Their opponent? The infamous Kratos – a team known for their tactical finesse and uncanny ability to drop balls precisely where you’re not. But Dames 5, riding high on two consecutive 4-0 victories, weren’t about to let reputation rattle them.
The match began with a hiccup: the referee’s whistle refused to whistle. A minor technicality. Then, the team captain lost her voice after just ten points. No matter – she continued to shout like a seasoned truck driver, and the game rolled on. Caitlin delivered sets worthy of a highlight reel, and Willemijn’s spikes were nothing short of ballistic. On the sidelines, self-proclaimed beach volleyball guru Floris coached with the intensity of a man who’d bet his lunch on the outcome. First set? Bagged.
With a few player swaps, the second set kicked off. A beautiful pass led to a set… straight into the net. Oops. Kratos switched tactics, opting for clever placements over brute force. But Dames 5 saw through it like volleyball clairvoyants. With grit and grace, they snatched the second set too.
At 2-0, spirits soared. A third 4-0 win seemed inevitable. But then – disaster. The defence crumbled, Caitlin struggled to set, and Kratos seized the opportunity. The third set slipped away. Not ideal.
Now 2-1, it was do-or-die. A fifth set was out of the question – there was cake waiting. The fourth set began with fierce serves, solid defence, and sharp attacks. A few points were carelessly handed over, prompting visible frustration from Coach Floris. The team snapped back into focus. With pinpoint sets and thunderous finishes, Dames 5 clinched the fourth set and the match.
After the battle, celebrations continued in the cosy clubhouse with birthday cake and post-match banter. Still top of the league, Dames 5 march on toward their goal: the championship. Bravo, ladies – keep smashing it!
