What a year 2024 has been! While the world was captivated by major events, we at Sovicos wrote our own piece of history. Let’s look back together on a year filled with surprises, records, and unforgettable moments.
While Max Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive Formula 1 title, our stars from Dames 4 raced to their own championship. No pit stops needed, as they zoomed from victory to victory.
On the political front, we saw major shifts. While Trump returned as president of the United States and Mark Rutte stepped down as prime minister after years of service, we at Sovicos also said goodbye to familiar faces and welcomed new ones. Ronald took over as our new chairman, and Andreea eagerly assumed the role of treasurer. A fresh start for both our club and our board.
In 2024, after 35 years, Tetris was finally completed, and the MP3 player made a comeback. Just like Heren 1! After a tough season, Heren 1 managed to end the year on a high note, winning their final match 4-0.
The internet also had its trends. In 2024, ‘EK 2024’ was the most searched term on Google, and ‘gratis’ topped the list on Marktplaats. At Sovicos, we focused on finding ways to make our time together even more enjoyable. From the BlackLight tournament and SovIntro tournament to Volunteer Day, we turned every event into a celebration!
In literature, Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend was crowned the best book of the 21st century. While we didn’t write a bestseller, we did create an important chapter for the future: we began working on our new policy plan, Sovicos 2025+.
Elsewhere on Earth, Syrian rebels brought an end to 14 years of Assad’s rule. Closer to home, we celebrated the end of another kind of waiting. Our beach court finally received its finishing touches: a storage room with a kitchenette, a fridge, and freshly painted picnic tables. Finally complete, and ready for even more summer smash sessions!
Legendary producer and musician Quincy Jones passed away, Joost Klein had to leave the Eurovision Song Contest after a disqualification, and it was 30 years in 2024 since Kurt Cobain passed away. At Sovicos, we filled the air with cheerful notes on the field, in the canteen, and during the first season of SoviScore, which became an instant hit. Dames 2 took home the grand prize, but Heren 3 and Heren 1 also won prizes.
With all these events — both big and small — we close out 2024 with a smile. Thank you to everyone who contributed this past year, in whatever way. Here’s to a brilliant 2025!
