To get to know our members better, I’ll be visiting someone every month to ask them about their five favorites! Last month, I kicked things off with the five favorites of Miriam (D1). This month, it’s Stijn’s turn (Beach & H4) to share his favorites with you.
As irresistible as he is, Stijn and I hit it off right away—and after chatting about his five favorites, I quickly understood why. With his love for fantasy, travel, and delicious food, there was more than enough to talk about.
Like me, Stijn is a fan of the epic stories from Middle-earth. The Lord of the Rings films are his ultimate favorite. Naturally, I immediately asked if that was also his favorite book. Personally, I’m a huge fan of The Hobbit, which I take everywhere—with me on long trips or weekend getaways; I read it over and over again. But Stijn has a different favorite.
“Lord of the Rings felt too slow to me as a child… Eragon, on the other hand, is full of adventure and action. I’ve really read that book to pieces,” Stijn enthusiastically shares. Although it’s not my favorite, I have to admit I’ve read that book more than once, too! For those unfamiliar with the book: Eragon, written by Christopher Paolini, follows a young boy who discovers a mysterious blue stone. It turns out to be a dragon egg, and soon he becomes entangled in a world full of dragons, magic, and a battle against evil. A must-read for any fantasy lover!
Now it’s time to see if Stijn and I share the same taste in music. And yes… his favorite band is Tesseract! Perhaps a bit less known to most, but certainly not to me. Tesseract is a British alternative metal band from “the roundabout capital of England,” Milton Keynes. Coincidentally, I lived near there, so I’m definitely familiar with this band. Their unique mix of progressive metal and melodic vocals makes them a band to enjoy.
Dragons, wizards, and metal—it all sounds exciting, but how does Stijn find a bit of peace? By traveling, of course! His favorite destination is one of tranquility, nature, and the sea all around: Madeira. This beautiful Portuguese island in the Atlantic Ocean is known for its impressive hiking trails, tropical flowers, and breathtaking ocean views. According to Stijn, it’s the perfect place to recharge!
For Stijn’s favorite food, we don’t stay in Portugal, but travel all the way to Korea! His ultimate favorite is Korean BBQ. Yum! Nothing beats a table full of different types of meat, vegetables, and sauces that you can grill yourself. The cozy atmosphere and delicious food make this the perfect meal for Stijn.
Coffee or Tea?
And last but not least: coffee or tea? On this too, Stijn and I agree: coffee, of course! The perfect fuel to start the day or to recharge before a match.
