At Volleybalvereniging Sovicos, the safety of our members and volunteers is a top priority. As a club, we are committed to creating a socially safe environment where everyone feels welcome and protected. That’s why we have had a policy for many years to apply for a Certificate of Conduct (VOG) for all our volunteers. In this blog, we explain why the VOG policy is important, what a VOG is, and how we implement this within the club.
What is a VOG?
A Certificate of Conduct (VOG) is an official document issued by the Ministry of Justice and Security that certifies that a person’s past does not pose any risk in fulfilling a specific role within an organization. At Sovicos, we apply for a VOG on behalf of all our volunteers—board members, committee members, and coaches. This helps us ensure that everyone involved in the club meets the standards for a safe sporting environment.
Why a VOG?
The VOG is an essential tool to ensure safety within our club. By applying for a VOG, we minimize risks such as misconduct, bullying, or other forms of abuse. It contributes to a culture where safety, respect, and integrity are paramount. As a club, we take responsibility for protecting our members, especially vulnerable groups such as children and youth.
The 4 V’s of safety
The Dutch Volleyball Federation (Nevobo) has called on all clubs to meet the following 4 V’s of safety by January 1, 2025:
- Club-wide code of conduct: A code of conduct that applies to all members and volunteers.
- Confidential contact person (VCP): Someone within the club whom members and volunteers can approach with concerns about inappropriate behavior.
- Certificate of Conduct (VOG): A mandatory VOG for all key members (board members, committee members, coaches).
- Professionally trained coaches: Ensuring that coaches have the necessary skills and certifications.
At Sovicos, we are proud to have adhered to these guidelines for many years. In addition to a code of conduct, we have not just one but two confidential contact persons available for our members. Our VOG policy has also been in place for a long time and continues to help maintain a safe environment.
The process for volunteers
For all volunteers at Sovicos—including board members, committee members, and coaches—the VOG is applied for by the VerenigingsCommissie. Volunteers may only start their role once the VOG has been received and registered. This process helps us ensure that everyone who holds a position within the club meets the necessary integrity standards.
Careful handling of personal data
Safety is not only about behavior at the club but also about how we handle personal data. To protect the privacy of our members, we require all volunteers to sign a confidentiality agreement. We also have guidelines, such as email etiquette and a GDPR checklist, which all volunteers must follow. This ensures careful management of the information shared within the club.
What to do in case of concerns or incidents?
At Sovicos, we aim to provide a sporting environment where everyone feels safe and comfortable. If you ever experience or witness something concerning, you can always contact our confidential contactcounselors via email or in person. Additionally, our board members and coaches are always available to support you.
With our VOG policy, confidential contactcounselors, code of conduct, and other measures, we are continuously working to ensure a safe environment for everyone at Sovicos.
