Referee Week: “An Ode to the Referee”

‘Week of the Referee’ has arrived, and that can only mean one thing: time to celebrate the people who make sure our matches run smoothly. At Sovicos, everyone is a referee, which makes it even more important to highlight the role of referees. Without them, there would be no matches, no competition, and no volleyball fun!

Why Everyone at Sovicos is a Referee

At Sovicos, we believe it’s important that everyone knows the basic rules of the game. That’s why getting your referee certificate is mandatory. This not only promotes greater understanding and respect for referees during matches, but it also ensures that everyone can contribute to officiating games.

In addition, we aim to train more people to become V4 referees or second referees for our promotion class matches. If you have the ambition to do more with refereeing, Sovicos offers you the opportunity to follow an official Nevobo course and referee at a higher level. This is valuable not only for the club but also for your personal development. On Monday, October 14th, from 9:15 pm to 11:00 pm, Sovicos will host a V4 refereeing course. Want to join? Sign up via this form.

Thank You, Referees!

On Friday, October 11th, we want to do something extra to thank our referees. They’re always there to make sure we can play volleyball, so this is the perfect moment to show your appreciation. We’ve gathered a few fun tips on how to celebrate the referees this Friday:

  1. Give a Personal Thank You
A simple “thank you” can make all the difference. Make sure to personally thank the referee after the match—a small gesture with a big impact!
  2. Organize a Round of Applause
Before the game, organize a round of applause with your team to show the referee that you appreciate their efforts.
  3. Make a Card or Drawing
Get creative: after the match, give the referee a homemade card or drawing from the entire team. It’s personal and fun!
  4. Treat Them to a Drink or Snack
After a long game, offering a drink or snack can brighten the referee’s day. Invite them to join you in the canteen for a treat after the match.
  5. Share Your Compliments on Social Media
Tag Sovicos on social media and post a picture of your team with the referee using #RefThankYou! The more appreciation, the better!

Your Role as a Referee

Refereeing is a great way to get more involved in the sport. By officiating matches, you gain a new perspective on the game and develop more respect for the rules and the role of referees. Want to know more about getting your referee certificate or signing up for the V4 course? Send an email to the Verenigingscommissie. They’ll be happy to help!

Let’s use Referee Week not only to thank our referees but also to recognize how vital they are to our enjoyment of the game. So, thank you, referees, for your dedication and enthusiasm both on and off the court!
